Gameplay in Manhunt consists of multiple linear levels driving the story. The player must survive each level by eliminating enemies by killing them in brutal ways. The game makes use of stealth, encouraging the player to remain hidden and strike enemies from behind. Hiding in the shadows will make the player "invisible", providing no one saw him enter them.
The player can distract and lure enemies in order to jump them or separate them, by throwing items, hitting walls and surroundings, kicking boxes and trash cans... etc. If a hunter spots a dead body, he will search harder and more determined, and many hunters will call for back up. The player has the ability to carry bodies and hide them in the shadows.
Once the player is behind an unaware hunter and holding a weapon, they can execute the hunter. There three different types of execution, in order of brutality: Hasty, Violent and Gruesome. Tapping the attack button will trigger a hasty execution, but holding the attack button down until the crossheir turns yellow will trigger a violent one and red, and gruesome one.
PlotEditThree years ago, James Earl Cash was put on death row at Darkwoods Penitentiary. On the night of the execution, James wakes up to find he was only sedated and set free, on condition that he stars in a snuff film. The "Director" speaks to him through an earpiece and gives him instructions as he must brutally kill members of various gangs, throughout rural Carcer City, whilst the Director films the violence through security cameras.
